Representation Theory:
Stuart Hall's Representation Theory states that media does not have fixed meanings, but instead reflect the ideologies of those who create the product. In my collage, I have used many images of people and things who I love, and so I want to be represented by them. I have pictures of me and all of my closest friends, as I feel like I am a mixture of all of them, and so I want to be represented by their attributes such as their love, kindness, and humour. Additionally, I have included images of my favourite artists (Taylor Swift and Harry Styles), as their music shapes how I think and act in my life, so their music and the lyrics they write represent me. Also, I have included pictures of a race track and running, as it is something that is such a big part of my life; I hope people see me represented through running, because it is a sport that truly makes me different from everyone else. I have a few pictures down the side of my favourite Marvel characters, as, similar to my friends, I take elements of their character and implement it into my personality, as so I hope that they represent me. Finally, I have ensured to use a lot of colour throughout the whole collage, as I think it represents my bubbly, optimistic personality and so I want to be seen for that.
Reception Theory:
Stuart Hall's Reception Theory states that media is encoded by producers with intended interpretations, but the able is able to decode these using their beliefs and experiences. There are three types of reading;
- Preferred reading: the audience fully accept the producer's intended meaning and ideology
- Negotiated reading: the audience partially accepts the producer's intended message, but modifies it to fit their own personal life experiences and beliefs
- Oppositional reading: the audience completely rejects, challenges, or disagrees with the intended message and underlying ideology
My collage could lead to people having many different interpretations of me, and I think the biggest reason for this is because of the artists I have chosen. A lot of people associate people who are fans of Taylor Swift as quite annoying and self-consumed, due to an unfair stereotype as a few fans act that way. This could lead to people thinking of me that way, due to their beliefs about the artist. Similarly, with Harry Styles, many people view his fans as obnoxious fan-girls, so could view the images of him as me being obsessed over him, whereas the reality is that I deeply relate to and enjoy his music.
